India’s world cup chances

India is one of the most unpredictable team in cricket (other being Pakistan). It is capable of winning against Australia (world champions) one day and lose to Bangladesh the next day. Hence in such a situtation how does one rate India’s world cup chances. It is difficult task. On the plus side India has a strong batting line up (atleast on paper), bowling is medicore since it lacks a match winnig bowler while about the fielding the less said the better. Saurav Ganguly’s strong comeback in the team during the recent South Africa tour is a positive development while Sehwag seems to be just totally out of touch. On the bowling side Zaheer Khan, Shreeshanth, Irfan Pathan, VRV Singh and Munaf Patel are good fast bowlers but lack consitency and probably take turns to get injured since atleast 2 of them are injured at any point of time.

But as stated earlier India is very unpredictable hence don’t be surprised if they come up with exceptional results or don’t enter the Super 8.

World Cup 2007 – structure

ICC cricket World cup 2007 will see 16 teams competing for 47 days. The teams have been divided into 4 groups with each group consisting of 4 teams each. These teams will play among themselves and top 2 teams from each group will advance to the next round. In the “Super 8″ round the teams will be playing each other in a round robin format except for the two teams of the same group. The “top four teams” of the Super 8 round will advance into the semi- finals and the winners moving into the Finals.

For the first time in the World Cup history each team will play warm up games with other international teams. Each team will play two other teams not necessarily of the same group.
